Classes take place once a week beginning January 13, 2020 - March 13, 2020
Morning Classes
ABSTRACT PAINTING
with Penny Melis in Wonderhut Science Area
Mondays 8:00 AM; Room Grades 3 & 4
Do you want to drive your parents crazy by creating art that is more advanced and complex than they can understand? Abstract art is often confused with basic, understated art, and is sometimes described as “not art” – cue eyeroll. In this class we’ll explore the range of expressions in abstract art using different colors and techniques. We will also learn about minimalism, how geometric shapes can create powerful statements and how texture can dominate the canvas.
SCULPTURE ART
with Caroline Wong and Gloria Chew in Wonderhut Science Area
Tuesdays 8:00AM; Grades 1 - 5
Did you know you can create sculptures out of all types of objects? In this class, we’ll explore mixed media materials in 3 dimensional forms, using materials such as cardboards, paints, wood, clay, metal wires, etc. We’ll learn about Alexander Calder’s art, explore self portraits, and build small scale homes or playgrounds.
BUGGIN’ OUT
with Kelly Collamore and Stephanie Tricola in Room 302
Tuesdays 8:00AM; Grades 1 - 5
In this class, we’ll explore the fascinating world of insects and get up-close with ants, colorful butterflies, metallic dragonflies, beetles with giant horns on their heads, disgusting flies, gorgeous spiders and more. We’ll start with some basic techniques for drawing bugs focusing on shape and structure and then begin to add color using pencils, oil pastels, paints and paper collage. We will finish the class with a collaborative collage creating one big bug!
SOFT SCULPTURES
with Tess Knoebel in Wonderhut Science Area
Wednesday 8:00AM; Grades 3, 4, & 5
Soft Sculpture will explore making 3 dimensional forms using soft materials including felt, leather, foam, yarn and other found materials. We will learn simple sewing and glueing techniques to hold our creations together. Think Ugly Dolls, Haus Brothers, and Nick Cave. We will find a way to fabricate any creature that you can conjure (within reason!).
DRAW ANYTHING
with Scott Moy in Room 302
Wednesdays 8:00AM; Grades 3, 4, & 5
Whether you love to draw and want to improve your skills or just want to learn the concepts of drawing, this class is for anyone who finds inspiration from the world around you. You will be shown how to go through the sketch process, then the finished drawing. We’ll cover basic geometric shapes and plotting as the tools to break an image down, then build it back up. Finally, you will learn to be objective with the results.
VIDEO WHY?
with Michael Walsh in the Library
Thursdays 8:00AM; Grades 2, 3, 4, & 5
In Video Why? we will explore what makes a piece of video a work of art by asking ourselves why? Why do we film this subject? Why does it have this look? Why does this action take place? Most people enjoy filming things and making videos, but as artists we search for a reason to create. In this class we will study selective works of video artists, and then create our own works by examining our “Why”. The students will learn aspects of filming, editing and producing video works.
SOUND ART!
with Mori Ninomiya and Michael Goldsman
Thursdays 8:00AM; Grades 3, 4, & 5
Have you ever thought about painting with sound? Crazy idea??? Not really! We live in a noisy world, filled with all sorts of sounds…beautiful sounds, scary sounds, quiet sounds, human sounds, and musical sounds. Sound art can be used not just on its own, but also connected with other forms of art, such as sculpture, performance art, video art, painting, etc. Sound art includes acoustics, psycho-acoustics, electronics, noise music, audio media, found or environmental sound, soundscapes, explorations of the human body, and other aspects of contemporary art. We will be using digital audio recorders, microphones, and computer software to record, experiment, design, layer, and compose group sound art projects. Let’s make some noise!!!
THINKING ABOUT DRAWING
with George Skelcher in Room 405
Fridays 8:00AM; Grades 1 - 5
In last year’s class, Drawing As A Tool, we looked at how to take basic drawing skills and use them to express thoughts and ideas. This year, Thinking About Drawing will continue to explore those skills, and expand on the range of thoughts and ideas which can be expressed, from the personal to the universal. Newcomers are welcome to join us – no previous drawing experience required.

In this class, we will explore and create pictures that go with words.
