The PS11 Garden is comprised of two areas: a green environment surrounding the playground and a large second floor sunny roof space. Downstairs in the big yard is where the reading garden, butterfly garden, shade gardens, composting area and rainbarrels are found. There are also raised beds growing food and vertical growing edible and flowering plants there. The roof area upstairs holds many self-irrigating containers which grow vegetables, herbs and fruits that are used in the school cafeteria or sold at the PS11 Farm Market. The students participate in every aspect of the garden accompanied by their teachers, parents and school staff. Additional activities include seasonal garden workdays for families, pumpkin composting and a spring plant sale.
Garden grants, the PS11 PTA and volunteers fund garden supplies. We come up with activities that students and teachers can do in the school garden. Garden volunteers also perform maintenance in the garden. For more information about the garden and how to participate, contact us via email at ps11farmtotablegroup@gmail.com.
