2nd Grade Computers / Technology with Mr. Fier
When Lab is open, Room 2-211
, office hours 8am to 4pm daily
When second grade students are in the computer lab they are learning to create text and picture presentations to augment their literacy and social studies classroom work. Besides the use of multi-media programs like Kid Pix and HyperStudio, students will work extensively this year in the program Kidspiration, (Kidspiration provides a cross-curricular visual workspace for K-5 learners to combine pictures, text, numbers and spoken words to develop vocabulary, word recognition, reading for comprehension, writing and critical thinking skills) to create a graphic map groupings of themselves and to augment their New York City studies. Part of these lessons will also involve searching for appropriate graphics, Internet search skills, exporting and importing.

Also in 2nd grade students start participating in the NYC Department of Education Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliant lessons using the Common Sense Media elementary school toolkit. This toolkit contains lessons on Internet safety, cyberbullying, appropriate online behavior, and other topics surrounding what it means to be a good Digital Citizen. In 2nd grade we talk about "Going Places Safely," "Sending Email," and "Showing Respect Online."

Though full fledged coding starts in 3rd grade, 2nd graders will be introduced to coding using programs such as Scratch, MicroWorlds Jr., and the website Code.org.

Currently all computer classes are remote / on Zoom. Please check with your classroom teacher for your student's times to attend. Also please join Mr. Fier's Google Classroom. Your child must be logged into with their DoE SSO @nycstudents.net credentials.
